The People’s Clinic is a community-based, nonprofit, full service healthcare facility that opened in August 2005 to serve citizens without health insurance who meet federal poverty guidelines. The clinic proudly serves Eastern Kentucky residents between the ages of 18 and 65.
This wonderful outreach operates in a large, rural, and medically under-served region consisting of 11 counties. The majority of the people in the service area are working poor who do not qualify for state medical benefits, disability, or Medicare. The effect of the region’s generally poor health and lack of insurance on local and regional healthcare providers is profound. The population that most desperately needs quality healthcare is the most unlikely to receive it. The People’s Clinic exists to fill the widening gap.
The People’s Clinic is a result of successful partnerships with the local hospital (St. Claire Regional Medical Center), Morehead State University, primary care physicians, specialists, nurses & mid-level providers, resident retirees, community & senior volunteers, churches, business leaders, and a whole community of concerned citizens.
The clinic is open every Tuesday for medical and specialty care. Each Monday the clinic alternates between dental and diabetes care. On Thursday evenings the clinic operates a wellness clinic either on-site or through one of the community partners. The People’s Clinic also facilitates the Lasting Changes Program throughout the region. Using local churches as outreach locations, monthly meetings and educational sessions are guided by Wellness Coaches, giving participants the opportunity to learn skills needed to change bad habits and behaviors that are detrimental to their physical and mental health. Over 1,800 patients have been seen since the clinic opened, but another 300+ are on the waiting list.
