Diaspora & Visitor Resource Center

P2P is currently developing a diaspora & visitor resource center at our office in Addis Ababa. We intend to create a useful and safe space for those visiting the country who need support, wish to learn more about how to get involved or simply explore the country, want to get connected to the internet, or otherwise find a welcoming and supportive home base during their stay.  The space is intended for use by visiting physicians, professionals, students, interns, researches, volunteers, travelers, family members, and any other visitors needing support or guidance.

Vision
To establish a warm lounge-like atmosphere which is comfortable and supportive for those visiting from abroad, especially those that have come to volunteer their time with P2P or other partner organizations.  The Diaspora Resource Center will be a gathering space where visitors can find information on how to navigate and thrive in Addis Ababa and other parts of the country.  Visitors will have access to wifi, limited printing, and our library of books and other resources.  The Diaspora Resource Center is meant to be a meeting point as well as a place to acquire information about local activities and amenities.

Resources
Those who wish to access the resource center will have several resources available to them in addition to wifi and limited printing.  For example, information will be available about local events, nearby restaurants, local hospitals, where to stay, internship and research opportunities, as well basic information such as how to set up a cell phone upon arrival.  The resource center is also home to a small library with books on a variety of health topics, local newspapers and magazines, Ethiopian heritage books, children’s storybooks, and more.  The resource center is child friendly, with games and coloring books for visitors who may be traveling with their children.  The most important resource, however, that is available to visitors is the P2P staff!  Visitors should feel welcome and free to ask members of our staff questions as they arise, including our Diaspora Resource Center Coordinator, Hiwot.

Literature is currently being developed for P2P programs and activities, including information about internship opportunities, volunteer/research opportunities, physician volunteer exchange programs, and travel/tourism. This information will be posted online here shortly, and will be available in hard copy format at the resource center itself. Additionally, basic logistical information will be presented in concise, colorful handouts focused on providing details of restaurants/café/food options, transportation/travel, cell phone/internet options, accommodation, and more.

We look forward to welcoming you in Addis Ababa and providing support to you and your family during your journey, whatever your intended purpose and plans may be! If you are scheduling an upcoming visit to Ethiopia and would like to visit the resource center, please feel free to contact us with your details.
