As part of the Ethiopia—Pfizer Diflucan partnership program, the Pfizer Foundation graciously responded in 2005 to P2P’s request to freely supply the drug Fluconazol (also known as Diflucan) to the Ministry of Health in Ethiopia to be used in the treatment of AIDS patients with systemic fungal infections. HIV weakens the immune system, which leaves patients who are positive at high risk of infections that take advantage of weakened immune defenses. These infections are often referred to as “opportunistic infections.” People with advanced HIV disease are more apt to get opportunistic infections, which Fluconazol can help to combat. Getting HIV+ patients access to anti-retroviral drugs such as this is the key to successfully managing the disease and ensuring maximum health of the patient.
